Linocut is not just printing.
When I first discovered linocut printmaking, I was not thinking about perfect results. I was drawn to the quiet focus of carving, the resistance of the lino under the blade, and the excitement of revealing a fresh print for the first time. With simple tools and curiosity, I began turning everyday coastal scenes and small moments into handmade prints.
Maybe you also want to step away from screens and create something real outdoors, with your hands?
You can imagine carving on a wild coastline and making your own prints of the sea, but working outside with unfamiliar tools and techniques can feel daunting. You want to enjoy the craft and create prints you are proud of, but you are not sure how to take your linocut out of the studio and into the places that inspire you.
Here is the truth. Outdoor linocut does not require a permanent studio or complicated equipment. It is about learning simple techniques, carving wherever you find yourself, and following a clear process that transforms an idea
into a finished print, from a seaweed block on the rocks to exhibition quality work on press.
In The Field Press: Carving the Coastline, I will guide you through the full outdoor linocut journey. From building your field kit and carving on the beach with found objects to printing repeat patterns and two-colour designs with a wooden spoon, you will work through each module in real coastal settings — rock pools, harbours, and even the back of a van. By the end of the course, you will have the confidence to carve and print anywhere the coastline takes you, and continue creating linocut work independently.Â
Hi! My name is Mark!
With more than two decades as a photographer, I explored ways to develop my artisanal skills. Printmaking was the perfect medium for what I wanted to create and allowed me to become a visual storyteller through my art. I started Lino Lord in 2019 as a way to tell my story.
Based in the coastal town of Falmouth, Cornwall, my work reflects the rugged landscapes and quiet moments found along the shoreline.
For me, linocut is more than just an art form. It is a way to slow down and reconnect with the physical world. There is something deeply satisfying about the resistance of the lino under a sharp blade and the magic of peeling back a piece of paper to reveal a fresh print.
I believe that art should be accessible and tactile. I’ve spent years refining my "purist" approach to printmaking, focusing on traditional methods that anyone can master at home. My goal is to help you move past the fear of making mistakes and find the same sense of focus and calm that I find in my studio every day.

Carve a crab design on the rocks, exploring textures and background effects, then print it with a vintage book press. Carve a two-block fish design and print it in two colours in the garden with a wooden spoon.
Modules 7 & 8
From Van to Harbour: Carving and Advanced Printing
Carve a Cornish coastal village from the back of a van using mobile-phone reference images, then print it with a tabletop press. Create a more complex harbour scene with advanced mark making and print exhibition-quality pieces with a tabletop or etching press.

Course Preview
You’re probably wondering what the course lessons actually look like. In this video, I want to show you a little course preview - short snippets from a couple of lessons so you can see what to expect.
I’ve designed these lessons to feel as if you’re pulling up a chair right next to me in my Falmouth studio. You’ll see exactly how I hold the gouge, the angle of the blade, and how much pressure to apply for every cut. We move at a steady, calm pace. I explain the "why" behind every choice, from the grain of the lino to the tackiness of the ink. You can rewatch the lessons as many times as you need and follow along with me!
